A man has been charged with killing an 89-year-old man whom he is accused of knocking to the ground while fleeing during an alleged robbery last month in downtown Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced today.

Ricardo Macias, 24, of North Hollywood is scheduled to be arraigned today on one count of murder.

Bail was set at $2 million.

On Dec. 20, Macias was at a pharmacy in the 200 block of West 7th Street in downtown Los Angeles where he allegedly stole property, prosecutors said. Upon being confronted, the defendant is accused of assaulting a security guard and then colliding with customer Jack Hernandez as he ran away.

Hernandez fell and hit his head and was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Macias faces a possible maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged.

Deputy District Attorney Scott Dominguez is the assigned prosecutor.
