LOS ANGLES — A man was found guilty Wednesday of raping and murdering a 20-year-old woman two years ago.

A jury deliberated for less than a day before finding Rene Rolando Ailon, 27, guilty of one count each of first-degree murder and forcible rape. Jurors found true the special circumstance allegation of murder during the commission of a rape.

Ailon is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 22 when he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

On May 13, 2017, Maylin Zulian Fuentes-Sanabria went to the defendant’s apartment in the 1500 block of South Gramercy Place in Los Angeles. Ailon raped the victim and strangled her to death, the prosecutor said.

After he murdered her, he went to work and left the woman’s body in the apartment for 24 hours before wrapping her in a blanket and dumping her in a discarded shopping cart several blocks away, the prosecutor added. A resident found the victim a short time later.

DNA evidence and phone records tied Ailon to the crime.
