LOS ANGELES — A 60-year-old man was convicted today of murdering a Silver Lake woman nearly 40 years ago.

Jurors deliberated for about four hours before finding Harold Anthony Parkinson guilty of one count of first-degree murder. The panel also found true a special circumstance allegation of murder during the commission of a rape.

Parkinson faces life in state prison without the possibility of parole when he is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 2.

On Aug. 30, 1980, Parkinson raped, fatally stabbed and beat Stephanie Sommers, 36, inside her apartment in the 3500 block of Marathon Street.

Forensic evidence from the crime scene was linked to Parkinson who is currently serving a 15-years-to-life sentence in Chuckawalla Valley State Prison for an unrelated 1981 murder in Los Angeles.
