Man shot 16-year-old daughter dead after he mistook her for home intruder, reports say

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Police say 16-year-old Janae Hairston was fatally shot by her father in the family’s garage after she was mistaken for an intruder Wednesday morning.

The incident happened around 4:28 a.m. in the 5400 block of Piper Bend Drive.

Police said when the home’s security alarm went off, the father responded to the garage, where he shot his daughter who he believed was a burglar.’

The mother can be heard on the 911 call pleading, “breathe, baby, breathe!”

“My husband made a mistake and shot her because he thought she was an intruder,” the mother told the dispatcher, according to NBC News. “She was in our garage and my husband just didn’t know what was going on. Oh my God!”

At this time, no arrests have been made.

The local school district Canal Winchester Local issued this statement to the community: “It is with great sadness we inform our school community, Janae Hairston, a junior at the high school has passed away. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and our thoughts, prayers, and support are with them.

“We are saddened by this tragic loss and will make every effort to help students and families cope. We will have counselors available when we return from winter break for any student who may need or want help or any type of assistance surrounding this loss. We can also provide resources for parents should you need them.”
