CALIFORNIA — A Lake Los Angeles man was sentenced today to 50 years to life in state prison for fatally shooting his wife in February 2018.

A jury convicted 37-year-old Michael Daniel Mayberry of one felony count each of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon after deliberating less than an hour on Feb. 25. The jury also found true an allegation that the defendant used a firearm, a handgun, causing great bodily injury or death.

On the afternoon of Feb. 25, 2018, Mayberry got into an argument with his wife, Sandy Mayberry, 28, at their home in northeastern Los Angeles County. After she said she was going to leave him and began to walk out of the house, he shot her four times in the back and then shot her once in the head after she had crawled onto the front lawn, according to court testimony.

The couple’s four children and the defendant’s mother were at the home during the shooting.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Homicide Bureau.
