“I don’t know the man personally, or if he has a family, but being able to save someone’s life so that they can go back to whoever, or whatever, makes them happy is an exuberant feeling. I was just at the right place at the right time.”

Only five months after graduating from the Academy, Police Officer Taina Rivera-Gianasio put her training to use by reviving a man suffering from a drug overdose. Just after roll call, Officer Taina Rivera-Gianasio walked to the local deli for a cup of coffee before her tour. On her way back to the 9 Precinct, a Sergeant called upon Officer Rivera-Gianasio to help an unconscious man.

Officer Rivera-Gianasio worked with the EMTs on scene and determined that the man was overdosing on an unknown substance. Once diagnosed, Officer Rivera-Gianasio jumped into action and administered her Department-issued Naloxone. Officer Rivera-Gianasio described what she was thinking as she attempted to revive the man:

“If it was my dad, uncle, or brother, I’d want an officer to help them. Those were the thoughts that were running through my head.”

After only a few seconds, the man regained consciousness and made slight movements. The EMTs then rushed the man to a nearby hospital for further treatment. When asked how she is adjusting to her new life as a NYPD police officer, she responded:

“It’s a dream come true every day. To be a part of the community and really help people.”
