NASHVILLE — Thursday evening’s death of an Arizona man who unsuccessfully tried to jump from the roof of the Ernest Tubb Record Shop to the roof of the Downtown Sporting Club, both on Broadway, is being classified as accidental.

The victim has been identified as Gage Schrantz, 22, of Tempe.

Central Precinct detectives were told that Schrantz was by himself when he ran into the entrance of Mellow Mushroom, 423 Broadway, up three flights of stairs, past security and onto the roof. He then jumped to the roof of AJ’s Good Time Bar at 421 Broadway, and from there to the roof of the Ernest Tubb Record Shop.

Witnesses said he got a running start and jumped toward the roof of the Downtown Sporting Club, a separation of 14 feet, but fell some 50 feet to the pavement.

Schrantz was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in very critical condition. He died Thursday night.
