LOS ANGELES — Maywood Mayor Ramon Medina Mojarro was sentenced today to 12 months of summary probation and 24 animal care classes after being found guilty of neglecting to take care of his dog in 201.

Mojarro was also was ordered to complete five days of community labor.

Mojarro, 59, was found guilty on Aug. 21 of one misdemeanor count each of cruelty to an animal and failure to care for an animal.

On Feb. 9, 2015, the pitbull mix named Hershey was taken to an animal shelter in Downey. According to evidence presented at the trial, the dog, who was kept at Mojarro’s auto shop, had severe muscle wasting, couldn’t walk or eat and had to be euthanized.

Hershey had a chronic illness and had been suffering for a long period of time but had not been taken to a veterinarian, the prosecutor said. Mojarro was not mayor at the time the crime occurred.
