The Minneapolis woman who fatally stabbed her boyfriend three months ago pleaded guilty Friday and will be sentenced June 9.

Zara Case, 36, pleaded guilty to the only charge against her, second-degree unintentional murder. In her court appearance, Case admitted that on the night of Feb. 15 she stabbed her boyfriend, 39-year-old Joseph McRunnel, during an argument after she had been drinking heavily. The incident occurred in the apartment building where Case lived at 990 15th Ave. SE.

The Star Tribune reported: McRunnel’s parents, neighbors and friends knew him as a “calm, passive person,” while Case was “volatile and confrontational when high or drunk,” the complaint said.

Case told police after the killing that she had recently left substance abuse rehabilitation and was addicted to methamphetamines and alcohol. Her criminal history includes convictions for drunken driving and obstructing police and multiple counts of drinking in public.

As part of her guilty plea, Case agreed to be sentenced to 128 months in prison, which is consistent with the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines.
