Mother Calls 911, Opens Fire Inside Apartment With Kids Inside, Prompting SWAT Standoff

SACRAMENTO — At 8:09 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office received a transferred call from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Communications Center. The female caller stated she wanted to report a break-in and then hung up. The call was coming from the 8800 block of La Riviera Drive in Sacramento.

Deputies arrived at the location and heard a gunshot from inside the residence. Additional resources were requested and the Sheriff’s SWAT team responded. As resources arrived, several additional gunshots were heard from inside the residence. No deputies fired their weapons.

Sheriff’s hostage negotiators were able to establish verbal contact with a female inside the residence. The female, who has been identified as Kathy Miller, surrendered to deputies peacefully.

Miller’s three young children were located inside the residence. They were unharmed and are with family members.

No one was injured in this event.

Miller was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges related to this incident.
