A man has been charged with killing a 70-year-old man in downtown Los Angeles last month, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced today.

Gerson Carrillotorres, 22, was charged with one count of murder.

On July 2, Carrillotorres is accused of punching Julius Rondez, 70, as he walked down the street in the 400 block of East Temple Street. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Officials say the attack was random and there was no motive.

If convicted, Carrillotorres faces a possible maximum sentence of life in state prison.

Deputy District Attorney Ashley Rosen of the Elder Abuse Section is prosecuting the case.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
