Homicide detectives continue to investigate a self-defense claim in Thursday’s 5:40 p.m. fatal shooting of Montez Jackson, 17, during what was allegedly to have been a marijuana transaction in the 300 block of Rainwood Court.

From interviews conducted thus far, lead Homicide Detective Will Mathis has determined that Brian McKeever, 23, and an 18-year-old friend drove to Rainwood Court in McKeever’s Toyota Avalon so that the 18-year-old could sell Jackson marijuana. The men said that Jackson got into the back seat of the car, and that as the deal was being discussed, pulled a pistol and shot McKeever in the leg. McKeever then shot Jackson multiple times until Jackson was out of the car. McKeever then drove to Skyline Medical Center for treatment of his gunshot wound. Jackson was transported by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died late Thursday night.

McKeever’s car was taken to the MNPD crime laboratory for processing. No charges have been placed in this case at present. The investigative findings will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office.
