A Minneapolis man was charged with second-degree murder in the death of a man at an apartment complex in South Minneapolis, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Wednesday.

At approximately 4 p.m. Sunday, Derrick Dwayne Blanton, 38, shot and killed Isiah Smith, 29, at 1906 1st Avenue South. Smith was shot five times, once in the back. Blanton is expected to make his first court appearance Thursday. Prosecutors are seeking $1 million bail.

According to the complaint, Smith’s ex-girlfriend, and current girlfriend to Blanton, reported the shooting when she returned home to see Smith lying face down outside her apartment surrounded by a pool of blood.

Several witnesses told police they heard multiple gunshots, and that two men and a child ran from the apartment building, getting into a black Dodge Charger, speeding away from the scene, the complaint states.

The complaint also reports that video surveillance shows Blanton, an anonymous man, and the child fleeing the area. Blanton was apprehended shortly after, and admitted to police that he shot Smith several times after getting into a physical fight.
