Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that detectives of the Newark Police Division are investigating three shootings that occurred between yesterday and today.

The most recent shooting occurred at approximately 1:21 a.m., when police responded to Mulberry and East Kinney streets on a call of shots fired. Two women and a man were shot and each received treatment at University Hospital. One of the female victims’ condition is critical at this time.

At approximately 11:23 p.m., last night, police responded to 7th Avenue and Stone Street where two victims, a male and a female, were shot. Both victims sustained non-life threatening injuries, were treated and released.

Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Director Ambrose announced up to a $10,000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the shooting of two adult males and a 6-year old boy yesterday at Central Avenue and 3rd Street at approximately 5:45 p.m. The victims were transported to University Hospital and each is listed in stable condition.

“The number of illegal guns on our streets and the ease with which they can be obtained is both ridiculous and pathetic, especially since New Jersey has some of the strictest guns laws in the nation,” Director Ambrose said.

“We continue to experience the unnecessary loss of lives and ruined families because of the number of illegal guns that make it into Newark and other urban cities, Director Ambrose added. “Through the combined efforts of the Newark Police Division, the Essex County Sheriffs Department, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey State Police we have removed more than 300 guns from our streets so far this year; with Newark Police officers responsible for confiscating more than 200 of these guns. We will continue our efforts to make Newark safer by concentrating our efforts on lawfully removing illegal guns from our streets and by arresting individuals who use or possess them.”

No motives have been yet identified and no arrests have been made, but we are following active leads. Thankfully, each incident resulted in non-fatal injuries. The number of firearms that make their way to our city is pathetic,” he added.

Director Ambrose urges anyone with information about these incidents to call the Department’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477) or 1-877-NWK-GUNS (1-877-695-4867). All anonymous Crime Stopper tips are kept confidential and could result in a reward.
