Nurse Stabbed Multiple Times Inside Emergency Room At Virginia Hospital

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Police are investigating after a nurse at a Newport News hospital was attacked by a patient early Thursday.

Around 12:30 a.m., Police were called to Riverside Regional Medical Center, located in the 500 block of J. Clyde Morris Boulevard. Responding officers found the victim, a 65-year-old Hayes, Virginia man who was suffering from multiple stab wounds. The victim is a nurse at the hospital.

His injuries are serious but he is currently in stable condition.

The suspect, 40-year-old Ricky Beachum of Chesapeake, Virginia was taken into custody at the scene and charged with assault counts and battery on health care provider.

The Riverside Health System issued this statement: “We are thankful for the quick response of our ER team, the Newport News police and others during this event. We are currently focused on supporting our ER team as they process the events that occurred last night, and ensuring the ongoing safety and welfare of our patients and team members.”

Police didn’t reveal a possible motive or what led up to the stabbing.
