NY State Police, FBI investigating numerous reports of explosion in Tioga County

Tioga, NY –  On December 31, 2016 at approximately 4:47 p.m., Tioga County 911 received numerous calls regarding an explosion that occurred in an unknown area in the Towns of Tioga, Owego or Candor – all in Tioga County, N.Y. A check of these areas for the site of an explosion was conducted with no site being immediately located.

On January 1, 2017, a continued search of the named areas resulted in a blast site being located in the vicinity of Diamond Valley Road, Town of Tioga, Tioga County, N.Y. Investigation at the scene indicated an unknown type of explosive substance was detonated in a field causing no damage but leaving a hole in the ground.

The site was processed by the New York State Police and FBI Bomb Disposal Units with evidence collected for analysis. Collected evidence is being forwarded to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia for chemical testing.
