Police Officers in Washington Heights arrested three men for tampering with a mailbox and attempting to steal mail last week.

Officers from the 33 Precinct responded to 156 Street and Amsterdam Avenue after an area resident observed a group of males trying to remove mail from a mailbox.

After receiving a description and searching the area, Police Officers Ritter and Fontanez were able to find the three suspects and place them under arrest.

An improvised tool that was being used to trap envelopes and pull them out through the mail slot was also recovered. The three men were charged with criminal tampering.

“When I spoke to local postal inspectors they said this was an issue in the area and with the holidays around the corner we don’t want anyone’s present to go missing,” said Police Officer Ritter.
