Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly today inducted five police officers and one detective as the newest members of the NYPD Mounted Unit.

“Our mounted officers are known for being able turn a half-ton horse on a dime through traffic, pursue fleeing perpetrators and quickly cover an enormous amount of territory, serving as invaluable crime-deterrents and ambassadors of the Department,” Police Commissioner Kelly said.

The officers train for three months in horsemanship, intensive riding, grooming, cleaning, and conducting medical care.

Mounted officers are assigned throughout the city. They are critical assets at demonstrations, parades and at other major events such as the New Year’s Eve ball drop celebration in Times Square.
