The following information is based on the preliminary investigation by the NYPD:

On Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at approximately 1606 hours, police responded to a call of a wellness check, located at 3700 Pratt Avenue within the confines of the 47 Precinct. Upon arrival, uniformed officers assigned to the 47 Precinct were met by the landlord of the location, who then advised them that he was concerned because he has not seen one of his tenants for some time.

The landlord led the officers to the 3rd floor and opened the door to the tenant’s apartment for them. Upon opening the door, the officers were met by a 31 year-old male brandishing a knife in his left hand, while concealing his right hand behind his back. The officers commanded the individual to drop the knife numerous times, but did not receive compliance.

While the officers were attempting to gain compliance from the individual, a second team of officers responded, one of which was equipped with a taser. The officers then observed what appeared to be a silver firearm in his right hand behind his back. The officers asked the individual if was holding a firearm, whether or not it was real, and then ordered him to drop it.

The officers told the individual that they did not want to hurt him. Again, the officers received no compliance. The individual then proceeded to raise his right hand with the gun in the direction of the officers, at which point one officer deployed the taser and another two officers simultaneously discharged their service weapons.

The individual was struck several times and was pronounced DOA at the scene. The investigation in ongoing.
