A father from Cincinnati mistakenly fatally shot his 14-year-old on Tuesday morning after mistaking him for a home intruder.
The man believed his son had set off to go to school, but the teenager returned home shortly after he set off.
Police said that the man was still in bed when he heard a noise coming from the basement, he went to check with a gun in his hand.
Authorities confirmed that the teenager was skipping school and that he planned to hide in the basement until his father went to work.
The father was started as the teenager walked up the basement steps and then fired the weapon, hitting his son in the neck.
He then dialed 911 at around 6:30am.
His son was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in ‘extreme critical condition’ and died around 8.15am.
The man is currently with Cincinnati police for questioning.
The identities of the father and the son have have not yet been released.
