Police in Paris have opened fire on am motorist who attempted to smash his way through a police checkpoint at a military museum.

The man drove his car into the checkpoint outside the Hotel des Invalides, a military museum which dates back to the 17th Century and is one of the city’s main tourist attractions.

Despite a policeman’s warnings to stop, the motorist continued trying to smash his way into the area and the officer opened fire.

A police source said there were no injuries, but the man was ‘incoherent’ and he had been arrested, according to Ouest France.

An official reported that a policeman fired around 10 shots at the vehicle, which was brought to a halt, and the driver was taken into custody.

It is believed he was trying to make his way through a side entrance on the Rue de Grenelle, in the 7th arrondisement.

Police said the car plowed through the entrance at the golden-domed monument, and the incident was under investigation.

A bomb squad truck was on site, though it was not clear what the man’s motivations were.

Paris remains on edge following last month’s terror attacks in which ISIS militants carried out a series of co-ordinated strikes that left 130 people dead.
