COLORADO — The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the gruesome death of a horse found Friday in a hay shed on property in Eastern Pueblo County.

Sheriff’s detectives have been following up on numerous leads received since the approximately 20-year-old American Quarter horse was found dead by its owner Friday morning (January 12, 2018) on property located in the 35000 block of Harbour Road. The horse was found with its throat slit, several of its organs missing and meat stripped for its bones. Sheriff’s detectives have not yet determined a motive for the crime but the family believes the animal was killed for the purpose of human consumption.

No suspects have been identified.

The horse’s owner notified the Sheriff’s Office of the grisly find hours after he had gone to check on his animals and property Friday morning. The owner found a chain on the gate to the property cut and discovered one of the horses missing. He later found the body of the horse in a hay shed on the property.

“We believe this to be an isolated incident,” said Pueblo County Sheriff’ Kirk M. Taylor. “We take this incident very seriously and will continue to investigate any leads that we receive.”
