Friendship, NY – The New York State Police say that Troopers and other local police agencies are in a search in Allegany County, near the Pennsylvania border, for the two convicts who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility last week.

WIVB in Buffalo says one of its reporters has been asked to leave the search area, because state police say it’s a “hot spot.”

Radio traffic monitored by CNN indicates police are moving large numbers of officers into the area. Responding officers have been asked to maintain radio silence.

From WKYC: “Police are searching cars at the Friendship/Bolivar exit of the I-86 and traffic on the main Southern Tier Expressway is backing up.

On June 13, witnesses spotted two men walking near a rail yard in Erwin, N.Y., New York State Police said in a statement. The next day, men who matched that description were seen walking along a road in Lindley, N.Y., heading toward the New York-Pennsylvania border.

The sightings came a week after two killers, Richard Matt and David Sweat, cut their way out of a jail cell at Clinton Correctional Facility. They were discovered to be missing on June 7, and authorities since have conducted a massive manhunt.”

David Sweat and Richard Matt escaped June 6 from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, near the Canadian border.

On Friday, state police said in a news release that two men fitting the description of Sweat and Matt had been seen a week ago in Steuben County. Allegany County is west of Steuben County.

Officials also said Friday that a corrections officer was placed on administrative leave as part of the investigation into the men’s escape.
