BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — A female suspect fired shots inside an ambulance at the Birmingham Airport before stealing the vehicle and leading police on a chase Saturday morning.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel were transporting a patient to an area hospital from the airport. While in route to the hospital, the patient, a black female, pulled a gun out and ordered the paramedics out of the vehicle.
At some point shots were fired, and the female drove off in the ambulance. Officers received a call about the incident, and searched for the vehicle. Within minutes the vehicle was spotted, and a brief pursuit ensued.
It ended at the intersection of 4th Ave. West and 3rd St. West, with no property damage.
Fire personnel did receive minor injuries from the incident, but otherwise are okay. The female suspect is in custody, and being looked at by paramedics. The incident is under investigation. We will update as information becomes available.
