A poll has revealed that 40% of German voters think that Angela Merkel should quit over the mass influx of migrants into Germany.

Recent figures reveal that almost 1.1million migrants entered Germany last year.

The poll surveyed Germans between January 22nd to January 25th, which revealed 40% saying she should quit over her attitude to welcoming migrants.

Merkel previously enjoyed very high popularity ratings among German citizens, that support has now dropped massively in recent months, most notably when the numbers of migrants entering the country increased.

The strongest support for Angela Merkel came from the Greens and the Democratic Union party.

“We want those with prospects of remaining to be integrated, but we also want to say that we need those who have no prospect of remaining to return,” Merkel said.

In recent weeks, Germany has announced they will speeding up the deportation of migrants who fail to seek asylum, Sky News has revealed.

The results of the poll, which was conducted between January 22 and 25, came just hours after Germany’s ruling coalition struck a compromise on changes to asylum laws.
