VIRGINIA — Police in Norfolk shot a man who killed a K-9 Officer during a seven-hour long standoff on Sunday night. Krijger died at the scene.

The standoff began when the suspect was fighting with his wife in the home. Police arrived and the woman fled the house. She told police her husband had a gun. After seven hours, the gunman emerged but refused to drop his weapon.

“Police gave several verbal warnings to the man to drop the gun and surrender,” a Norfolk Police spokesperson told WTVR. “The man instead opened fire and shot and killed a Police K-9. Police were then forced to shoot the armed man.”

“They had already shot him in the leg and he was on the ground and the German Shepard was eating him alive,” Strickland said. “So he took the gun to his left side and shot the dog.”
