TEXAS — A high school teacher in Lockhart is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Sarah Fowlkes, 27, a Lockhart High School biology teacher, “engaged in sexual contact” with a 17-year-old male student at the school, police say.

Fowlkes was arrested Monday after police learned she communicated with the victim in person and in text messages, police said.

Her mugshot is going viral as she seems to be perfectly happy about being booked into jail.

The Lockhart Independent School District released a statement:

“As soon as we learned of the report, we acted swiftly to involve law enforcement and CPS to conduct a thorough investigation. The district does not and will not tolerate any improper communication or contact between a teacher and child,” said Superintendent Susan Bohn.

According to her work page (that has since been taken down), Fowlkes taught Anatomy and Physiology and Environmental Systems. She said prior to teaching at Lockhart High, she was a teacher at Plum Creek Elementary.

Lockhart police say they’ve never investigated a teacher for having an inappropriate relationship with a student before. “Seventeen years old is obviously older but at the same time it doesn’t make anything right,” Detective Jesse Bell said. “If the kid is in school, parents trust the school to take care of their kids so it’s definitely not right — that a teacher in a position of power over a student be able to take advantage of a student.”
