Taiwan has become the first Asian country to ban the eating of cat and dog meat.
A new law that was passed on Tuesday outlaws the purchase, consumption or possession of cat and dog meat, which carries a maximum fine of 250,000 New Taiwan dollars.
Legislator Wang Yu-min hailed the landmark bill, saying it is a first in Asia and ‘shows that Taiwan is a society with advanced animal welfare.’
Repeated offenders will face a maximum of five years in jail and a fine of 5million Taiwan dollars.
Offenders can also be named and shamed under the new powers.
