BUENOS AIRES – A high stakes meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Argentina had no immediate results, however, no additional tariffs will be imposed between the two countries for the next 90 days, with talks continuing during the ceasefire.

Later on Saturday, the discussions were described as a “highly successful meeting” by Press Secretary Sarah Sanders in statement, who added that China agreed to label fentanyl as a controlled substance.

With the more than 72,000 deaths related to opioid across the United States estimated in 2017, the sharpest increase occurred among deaths related to fentanyl and synthetic opioids.

Ms. Sanders said the Chinese president, “in a wonderful humanitarian gesture, has agreed to designate fentanyl as a controlled substance.”

Washington and Beijing have been engaged in an economic dispute that has destabilized international markets and impacted global trade.

Mr. Trump told the Chinese president at the start of the dinner meeting in Buenos Aires that they would achieve “something great”. The encounter lasted over two hours.

As Trump left for the airport for his Saturday takeoff back to Washington, neither the American or Chinese delegations initially issued a statement.
