Turkish Soldiers Who Reqeusted Asylum In Greece To Be Returned; Could Face Death Penalty

Turkish soldiers who landed in Greece after the coup failed will be returned to Turkey where ministers could recommend the death penalty.

The death penalty was abolished in 2004 in Turkey, however the deputy leader has warned that Erdogan could restore the death penalty.

At least eight soldiers landed in Alexandroupolis and attempted to claim asylum in the state.

The Turkish foreign minister demanded that the soldiers should be indentured to Turkey immediately to face punishment.

Officials in Greece said that they would have to review international laws before returning the soldiers, they promised to send the helicopter back,

Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has now said that Greece has promised to return the soldiers.

Labour Minister Soylu has just accused the US of being behind the coup attempt on live TV in Turkey.

Turkish President Erdogan has just demanded that the US extradite Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who he blames for attempted coup.

As a result of the failed Turkey military coup, over 192 people have died, 2,000 have sustained injuries, at least 2,800 soldiers have been arrested and 2,745 judges have been arrested.

A spokesperson fro Greece said that they will return the helicopter and they will follow international law regarding the soldiers.

‘However, we give very serious considerations to the fact that (the Turkish military men) are accused, in their country, of violating the constitutional order and trying to overthrow democracy.’
