NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE — A lingering dispute over a girl appears to have led to the gunfire that killed James G. Nevils, 23, outside Whites Creek High School last Friday night.

North Precinct detectives this morning are charging brothers Jamontae Davis, 21, and Kevonte Davis, 18, with criminal homicide.  They were taken into custody during the night in Columbia, where Kevonte Davis attends Columbia State Community College and is a member of the school’s basketball team.

The investigation, which is being led by Detective Nicholas Kulp, shows that Nevils and the Davis brothers were at Whites Creek Friday night attending the boys’ varsity basketball game against Pearl Cohn.  Security video shows Nevils walk out of the gymnasium into the lobby at halftime.  The Davis brothers followed a short time later.  The three got into an argument in the lobby, after which the Davis brothers left the building.  Nevils then went outside.  The argument continued for 20 to 30 seconds before Nevils suffered a fatal gunshot wound to his torso.
