U.S. Border Patrol Agents Find 3,800 Pounds of Marijuana Inside Coconuts

PHARR, Texas—U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations (OFO) at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility seized 3,874 pounds of alleged marijuana which was discovered within a commercial produce shipment.

“Our frontline CBP officers intercepted this significant load of marijuana thanks to great teamwork and the utilization of all available tools and resources,” said Acting Port Director Javier Cantu., Hidalgo/Pharr/ Anzalduas Port of Entry. “It all begins with our targeting capabilities, which is paramount in our interdiction efforts.”

On June 19, CBP officers working at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge cargo facility encountered a tractor/trailer with a commercial, manifested importation of fresh coconuts.

The conveyance was referred for a secondary examination and once on the inspection dock, officers collaboratively discovered packages of suspected narcotics hidden within the boxes of coconuts.

Ultimately, officers removed and seized 7,205 compact packages of alleged marijuana weighing approximately 3,874 pounds which carries an estimated street value of $775,000.

The case remains under investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents.
