WESTMINSTER – A deal designed for the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union brought forward by the government of Prime Minister Theresa May failed to past parliament in a historic defeat, with Jeremy Corbyn tabling a vote of no confidence.

Legislators voted 432 ballots against the plan and 202 for the document that laid out the terms of the British exit scheduled for Mar. 29 — the largest defeat for a sitting government in history.

May said that there would be time allotted for the motion, which could trigger a snap election, on Wednesday, a confidence vote that Corbyn said would allow the House of Commons to “goose its verdict on the sheer incompetence of this government”.

If members of parliament vote in favour of the no confidence motion the government or majority party would get 14 days to counter with a further confidence ballot, and a loss on the secondary vote would trigger a general election.
