The LAPD has released a frantic 911 call and new body camera video of the aftermath of a gun battle between an off-duty officer and an armed suspect outside the officer’s home in Van Nuys in April. The shootout left both the officer and gunman wounded.

On April 28, 2021, at approximately 2:25 p.m., Van Nuys uniform officers responded to a radio call of “Shots Fired” at the 5200 block of Vesper Avenue in Van Nuys. The officers found an off-duty LAPD officer with gunshot wounds at the scene as well as a male Hispanic suspect, also suffering from gunshot wounds. A preliminary investigation revealed the off-duty officer encountered the suspect inside the off-duty officer’s garage. The suspect armed himself with a firearm, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting. The suspect and officer exchanged gunfire. The suspect was identified as Christopher Carmarena-Quintanilla and arrested at scene by responding officers and transported to a local hospital where he received medical treatment. The off-duty officer also sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital. He received medical treatment and is expected to survive his injuries.

Two firearms were recovered at scene.

Robbery Homicide Division will conduct the criminal investigation and Force Investigation Division will conduct the Officer-Involved Shooting investigation.
