JAKARTA – Following the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano and undersea landslides, a tsunami struck the coast of Indonesia’s Sunda Strait on Saturday, killing at least 43 people and injuring 548, government officials said.

Jakarta’s National Agency for Disaster Management, or BNPB, said that there were over 200 buildings damaged by the tsunami, adding that they expect the death toll to rise.

Officials are still investigating to verify that the life-crushing tsunami was indeed caused by the volcanic activity on the island of Anak Krakatoa.

Volcanologist Jess Phoenix told BBC News that when volcanoes erupt, hot magma pushes underground and can displace and push through colder rock, triggering a landslide.

But because part of Krakatoa is underwater, she said “instead of just causing a landslide, you get an undersea landslide which pushes water as it moves,” a disruption that can cause a tsunami.
