What is IQOS?
IQOS is a heated tobacco product marketed by Philip Morris International under its Marlboro and Parliament brands. It consists of a charger about the size of a small smartphone, a pen-shaped holder, and a disposable tobacco stick called the HeatStick. It works by heating tobacco, but not burning it, thus releasing less harmful substances and chemicals than your typical tobacco cigarette.
It was first released in Nagoya, Japan and Milan, Italy in 2014, and is now slowly being introduced to other countries. As of October 2019, it was reported that it was available in over 49 countries worldwide.
Why should you use IQOS?
Because IQOS products do not actually burn the tobacco it results in less harmful chemicals, like those that cause cancer and other harmful conditions, being released. Users mentioned that they don’t notice much difference between normal cigarettes and IQOS products. They also said that the smell released by the IQOS products did not have as strong of a smell and odor as normal tobacco cigarettes.
Aside from these, it doesn’t stain the teeth as much and is also cheaper to sustain. It was also noted that the amount of nicotine present might be a little bit too much for light cigarette smokers.
Many IQOS products also sport a very sleek and refined appearance, akin to that of Apple products.
How does IQOS work?
It’s all in the HeatStick. The HeatStick contains tobacco soaked in propylene glycol. It is then inserted into the holder where the contents are heated up to 350 degrees Celsius. Once it has reached this temperature, it will start to release smokeless secretion that is very much similar to that of normal cigarette smoke that can then be inhaled through the holder.
IQOS vs. Tobacco Cigarettes
IQOS shares a lot of similarities with tobacco cigarettes and but does those things better. Both use real tobacco to replicate that authentic tobacco taste, but since the tobacco is heated and not combusted, there is no ash and smoke that you have to deal with. In addition to all of this, IQOS has many different models, so you can choose what fits you the most.
Can IQOS help me quit smoking?
While IQOS products provide a wonderful alternative to cigarette smoking, it still has similar effects to normal cigarettes. So, if you want to use IQOS to help you quit smoking, you are still better off quitting outright.
