Animals are unpredictable, and there is always room for injury and accident. Illness is always a possibility when it comes to your pet. Vet visits are expensive and can end up costing you thousands of dollars that you more than likely don’t have to spend.

In this case, the sad and unfortunate reality is that your pet may have to be put down if they are in pain. This situation even has a name it is so common. This is known as economic euthanasia.

If your pet has insurance, some or all of their emergency costs may be covered by the plan. This will make treatment way more afforable for your family and you can avoid having to possibly put your pet down.

What are some of the other benefits of pet health insurance? What exactly does it cover? Let’s take a quick look at why your pet should have insurance.

What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Similar to health insurance we get as humans, pet insurance offers different coverage types, each of which has certain coverage and price options. The most common coverage types are accident, accident and illness, and wellness.

Wellness

Wellness coverage will most often include vaccinations, regular testing, and any dental procedures your pet may need. Sometimes this type of treatment is also referred to as preventative or routine. Wellness typically does not have a deductible, but will not cover accidents or illness.

Accident

This coverage will take care of any kind of accident. This can include ingesting poison or any kind of object they should not have injested, a car accident, accidental cuts, and any other type of accidental injury.

An accident-only plan is usually beneficial for those who have an older pet who does not qualify for comprehensive coverage anymore.

Accident and Illness

This will be the type plan that will cover most vet treatments, and illness, disease, or injury. It will also cover any behaviorial or physical changes with your pet that may be associated with an illness. Depending on the insurer and what they offer, it may be necessary to add on a wellness plan in addition to the accident and illness coverage.

How Does Pet Insurance Work?

Your pet insurance coverage plan does not pay the vet directly. Instead, the policy holder will reimburse you for the money you spend at the vet.

After you sign up for your policy, there is usually a required waiting period.  After this waiting period is over, you will be able to submit claims to the policy holder after you pay for the treatment at the vet. You can usually submit claims online, over the phone, or by mail.

Deductible

The deductible of your pet insurance plan is the amount that you will have to pay out of pocket before you can start receiving reimbursement for vet costs. It is most common for plans to come with an annual deductible.

What is Actually Covered By Pet Insurance?

The accident and illness plan will cover emergency care, tests, and treatments for accidents and unexpected illness. An accident only plan will cover expenses only in the case of an accident. If you opt to go with a wellness plan, you can be reimbursed for routine costs like checkups and vaccinations.

Conclusion

Having an insurance plan for your pet can be very beneficial to you in the event of an accident or illness. You can also get a plan that will cover routine costs, which is great if you have a puppy who usually goes to the vet every month.
