{"id":117451,"date":"2018-02-26T13:05:46","date_gmt":"2018-02-26T18:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/breaking911.com\/?p=117451"},"modified":"2018-02-26T13:05:46","modified_gmt":"2018-02-26T18:05:46","slug":"breaking-deputy-accused-failing-act-school-shooting-releases-statement-says-no-coward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/breaking911.com\/breaking-deputy-accused-failing-act-school-shooting-releases-statement-says-no-coward\/","title":{"rendered":"Deputy accused of failing to act during school shooting releases statement, says he is no coward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Broward County Sheriff&#8217;s Deputy Scot Peterson released a statement today in response to his failure to enter the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during the <a href=\"https:\/\/breaking911.com\/surveillance-video-shows-florida-gunman-massacre\/\">deadly shooting.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Scot Peterson\u2019s actions at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>To the South Florida Community &amp; the American Public:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Scot Peterson has hired Attorney Joseph A. DiRuzzo, III to assist Mr. Peterson in responding to what Mr. Peterson knows to be unfounded criticism of his actions on February 14th, and uncalled for attacks upon his character by, among others, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On Thursday February 22nd Sheriff Israel held a press conference a mere eight days after the tragedy and accused Mr. Peterson of failing to respond appropriately, with the clear implication that Mr. Peterson was responsible for failing to help the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Sheriff Israel has maligned Mr. Peterson even though Mr. Peterson has had a decorated career with the Broward Sheriff\u2019s Office, including receiving glowing annual performance reviews and being named the school resource office of the year in 2014 for Parkland. Further, Sheriff Israel has made his accusations at a time when he has admitted that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement\u2019s investigation is on-going, in what Israel himself characterizes as \u201ca fluid investigation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Let there be no mistake, Mr. Peterson wishes that he could have prevented the untimely passing of the seventeen victims on that day, and his heart goes out to the families of the victims in their time of need. However, the allegations that Mr. Peterson was a coward and that his performance, under the circumstances, failed to meet the standards of police officers are patently untrue. Mr. Peterson is confident that his actions on that day were appropriate under the circumstances and that the video (together with the eye-witness testimony of those on the scene) will exonerate him of any sub-par performance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sheriff Israel has indicated that the video may never be released to the public, but then commentated on the very same video to allege that Mr. Peterson took up a position on the west-side of the building, but that Mr. Peterson never went in the building. Sheriff Israel\u2019s statement is, at best, gross oversimplification of the events that transpired. Sheriff Israel\u2019s February 22nd statement conveniently omitted the following facts for the public\u2019s consideration:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mr. Peterson initially \u201creceived a call of firecrackers \u2014 and not gunfire \u2014 in the area of the 1200 Building.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\uf0b7 In response to the firecracker call Mr. Peterson along \u201cwith Security Specialist Kelvin<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Greenleaf exited the 100 Building and ran north the couple of hundred yards to the 1200<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Building.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\uf0b7 Upon arriving at 1200 Building Mr. Peterson \u201cheard gunshots but believed that those<\/em><br \/>\n<em> gunshots were originating from outside of any of the buildings on the school campus.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\uf0b7 BSO trains its officers that in the event of outdoor gunfire one is to seek cover and assessthe situation in order to communicate what one observes to other law enforcement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\uf0b7 Consistent with his training, Mr. Peterson \u201ctook up a tactical position between the 700-800 buildings corridor\/corner.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\uf0b7 Mr. Peterson was the first BSO officer to advise BSO dispatch that he heard shots fired.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\uf0b7 Mr. Peterson \u201cinitiated a \u2018Code Red\u2019 lockdown of the entire school campus.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\uf0b7 \u201cThe first police officer that arrived on-scene was from the Coral Springs Police<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Department.\u201d Mr. Peterson informed this Coral Springs Police Officer that he \u201cthought<\/em><br \/>\n<em> that the shots were coming from outside.\u201d This Coral Springs Police Officer took up a<\/em><br \/>\n<em> tactical position (approximately twenty yards away from Mr. Peterson) behind a tree with<\/em><br \/>\n<em> his rifle.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\uf0b7 \u201cRadio transmissions indicated that there was a gunshot victim in the area of the football<\/em><br \/>\n<em> field,\u201d which served to confirm Mr. Peterson\u2019s belief \u201cthat the shooter, or shooters, were<\/em><br \/>\n<em> outside.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\uf0b7 Mr. Peterson had the presence of mind to have the school administrators go to the school\u2019s video room to review the closed-circuit cameras to locate the shooter and the obtain a description for law enforcement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\uf0b7 Mr. Peterson provided his keys to the Coral Springs SWAT team so that they could enter<\/em><br \/>\n<em> the 1200 Building.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\uf0b7 Mr. Peterson \u201cprovided BSO SWAT Command with handwritten diagrams of the entire<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Stoneman Douglas campus for student evacuation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We note that Sheriff Israel\u2019s accusations are wholly inconsistent with the position he has taken in response to Representative Bill Hager\u2019s criticisms. It is our understanding that Sheriff Israel acknowledged that the investigation remains on-going and that \u201c[i]nvestigations will not be rushed or asked to jump to conclusions.\u201d But this is exactly what Sheriff Israel did, he jumped to a conclusion regarding Mr. Peterson\u2019s performance on February 14th even though Israel claims that \u201c[i]t is more important for us to wait and let the investigators get it right[.]\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We question why this statement would not also apply to Mr. Peterson?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mr. Peterson is looking forward to cooperating with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement\u2019s investigation, which we hope will detail the events of that tragic day and which we believe will ultimately clear Mr. Peterson\u2019s name<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Broward County Sheriff&#8217;s Deputy Scot Peterson released a statement today in response to his failure to enter the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during the deadly shooting.
