LOS ANGELES — Two brothers were convicted yesterday afternoon of fatally beating their neighbor nearly three years ago.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, the jury found Flavio Macias Jr., 31, guilty of first-degree murder. Jurors also found true a special allegation that the defendant personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a hammer, during the commission of the killing.<\/p>\n
Macias Jr.\u2019s brother and co-defendant, Jonathan Macias, 26, was convicted of second-degree murder.<\/p>\n
Flavio Macias Jr. faces a possible maximum sentence of 53 years to life in state prison, while Jonathan Macias could be sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison.<\/p>\n
Deputy District Attorney Michelle Weiske, who prosecuted the case, said on Aug. 24, 2015, Flavio Macias Jr. attacked his neighbor, Luis Segura, 44, with paving stones and a hammer. Jonathan Macias served as a lookout.<\/p>\n
When sheriff\u2019s deputies arrived at the location, the Macias brothers barricaded themselves in their home. Law enforcement used tear gas and a K-9, at which point the defendants exited the home and were arrested, the prosecutor added.<\/p>\n
