Barry was admitted to Howard University Hospital on Thursday, but was released earlier Saturday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\"><b>Marion Shepilov Barry, Jr.<\/b>\u00a0(March 6, 1936 &#8211; November 23, 2014) was an\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">American<\/a>\u00a0politician who served as the second elected\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Mayor of the District of Columbia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mayor_of_the_District_of_Columbia\">Mayor of the District of Columbia<\/a>\u00a0from 1979 to 1991, and again as the fourth Mayor from 1995 to 1999. He has been a member of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Council of the District of Columbia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Council_of_the_District_of_Columbia\">Council of the District of Columbia<\/a>, representing\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Washington, D.C.\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C.\">Washington, D.C.<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"List of neighborhoods of the District of Columbia by ward\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_neighborhoods_of_the_District_of_Columbia_by_ward#Ward_8\">Ward 8<\/a>, since 2005. A\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"United States Democratic Party\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Democratic_Party\">Democrat<\/a>, Barry previously served two other tenures on the DC Council, as an at-large member from 1975 to 1979 and as Ward 8 representative from 1993 to 1995. In the 1960s, he was involved in the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"African-American Civil Rights Movement\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African-American_Civil_Rights_Movement\">African-American Civil Rights Movement<\/a>, serving as the first chairman of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Student_Nonviolent_Coordinating_Committee\">Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee<\/a>\u00a0(SNCC). (WIKI)<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\">Barry came to national prominence as mayor of the national capital, the first prominent civil-rights activist to become chief executive of a major American city;\u00a0he gave the presidential nomination speech for\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Jesse Jackson\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jesse_Jackson\">Jesse Jackson<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"1984 Democratic National Convention\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1984_Democratic_National_Convention\">1984 Democratic National Convention<\/a>. His celebrity transformed into international notoriety in January 1990, when Barry was videotaped smoking\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Crack cocaine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crack_cocaine\">crack cocaine<\/a>\u00a0and arrested by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Federal Bureau of Investigation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Federal_Bureau_of_Investigation\">FBI<\/a>\u00a0officials on<a class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Drug policy of the United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drug_policy_of_the_United_States\">drug charges<\/a>. The arrest and subsequent trial precluded Barry seeking re-election, and Barry served six months in a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"List of U.S. federal prisons\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_U.S._federal_prisons\">federal prison<\/a>.
