BALTIMORE — Scroll Down For Video — Freddie Gray’s death of a mysterious spinal injury he suffered in police custody has been ruled a homicide, and the officers involved in his arrest are being charged, one of them with murder, Baltimore authorities said Friday.

Gray died of a severe and critical neck injury he suffered as a result of being handcuffed, shacked by his feed and unsecured inside the wagon, state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby said at a press conference on Friday.

Gray was “illegally arrested,” she said. She said police had failed to establish probable cause for his arrest. The knife he had when arrested was legal and was not a switchblade, she said.

After his arrest, Mosby said, Gray was loaded into the police van head-first and was not secured by a seat belt, contrary to police orders. New video has surfaced from the arrest.

The new video shows officers putting Gray in leg shackles and handcuffs before placing him back in a police van head first and on his stomach.

Gray died on April 19 from spinal injuries suffered during his arrest a week earlier on April 12. His death sparked protests and rioting in the largely black city and heightened national tensions over police treatment of minorities.
