HUTTO, Texas — A Hutto police officer was killed in the line of duty this morning, according to the department.<\/p>\n
The Officer was intentionally run over, according to reports. He has been identified as Sgt. Chris Kelly.<\/p>\n
Sgt. Kelley was responding to a call and was not in uniform when the deadly incident happened.<\/p>\n
The suspect is in custody but authorities aren\u2019t releasing the person\u2019s name at this time. The Texas Rangers will be handling the investigation, KXAN reported.<\/p>\n
Kelly is the first Hutto police officer ever killed in the line of duty.\u00a0He is survived by his wife and two children, both under the age of 10.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was very well liked, a top-notch guy. We\u2019re going to miss that,\u201d said Daly. \u201cWe\u2019re a very small city with only 90 employees so we all knew each other and we see each other every day.\u201d Hutto PD has a total of 25 sworn officers.<\/p>\n
The Texas Department of Public Safety said they responded to the scene to assist in a foot pursuit. The Hutto Police Department said it responded to an officer-involved injury during the 10 a.m. hour.<\/p>\n
From KXAN: — “Kelley served on Hutto\u2019s police force since July 2008, according to the City of Hutto website.<\/p>\n
Kelley held an intermediate peace officer license through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education. He also held a special investigator certification; he was a law enforcement physical fitness instructor and a certified field-sobriety practitioner. Kelley was also in charge of handing the registration of sex offenders within the city limits, according the city government\u2019s website.<\/p>\n
Kelley previously worked as a University of Texas System police officer, Travis County jailer and Texas Department of Public Safety telecommunications operator, according to a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement report.” —<\/p>\n
The incident happened near the intersection of FM 1660 and Meadow Lark Lane.<\/p>\n
While the Hutto Police Department grieves the loss of one of their own, the Williamson County Sheriff\u2019s Office will be fielding the department\u2019s calls.<\/p>\n
U.S. Rep. John Carter (R-Texas) released the following statement Wednesday. Carter’s district includes Hutto:<\/p>\n
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Hutto Police Sergeant Chris Kelley, the Hutto police officer who was killed in the line of duty today. I strongly support our law enforcement men and women who put their lives in danger while keeping us safe. Sgt. Kelley leaves behind a wife and two small children. His bravery and commitment to the badge will be honored and remembered. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, the Hutto Police Department, and the entire Hutto community. He will be greatly missed.”<\/p>\n
