Paris has made all of their public transport free in a bid to ‘combat pollution.’<\/p>\n
The Metro underground system and overground rail in Paris were said to be buckling under the strain with thousands taking advantage of zero cost fares.<\/p>\n
City officials have banned half of all cars from travelling and made public transport free for a third consecutive day.<\/p>\n
Only vehicles with even-numbered plates are allowed to drive on Thursday in the French capital.<\/p>\n
But many motorists have been flouting the ban, with fines totalling 59,500 euros issued on Tuesday alone.<\/p>\n
Karine Leger, from the city’s air pollution monitoring group AirParif, said: “This is a record period of pollution for the last 10 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Paris prefect Michel Cadot said he would extend the car ban for a third day if necessary.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cAs long as the meteorological situation remains the same and emissions remain the same, we will not see the end of the pollution spike.”<\/p>\n
