On Thursday, product regulators in the U.S. announced that Yeti has issued a recall for 1.9 million coolers and gear cases due to concerns that the magnets on these products can detach, which could lead to severe injury or even death.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advised consumers to stop using the four recalled products immediately and to contact Yeti for information on obtaining a refund. The CPSC stated that the closures on the recalled items are prone to failure, resulting in the magnets becoming detached. If two or more high-powered magnets are swallowed, they can stick together or attach to another metal object and become lodged in the digestive system.

The products being recalled are the Sidekick dry gear case, M20 soft backpack cooler, and M30 soft cooler, both version 1.0 and 2.0.

These items were sold at various stores, including Amazon, Ace Hardware, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Academy Sports and Outdoors, and directly from Yeti, between March 2018 and January 2023. The gear case costs around $50, while the coolers range from $300 to $350.

Yeti has received 1,399 reports of the magnet-lined closures deteriorating or failing, including reports of missing or detached magnets.

No injuries resulting from magnet ingestion have been reported.

Consumers can contact Yeti toll-free at 833-444-3151 from Monday to Sunday between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT. The company can also be contacted via email at [email protected] or through their website at https://stg.yeti.com/M20-M30-sidekick-product-recall.html or www.yeti.com.
