LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles man was charged Friday with killing a gas station convenience store clerk.

Kevin Steve Gomez, 25, faces one count each of murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

On June 24, Gomez allegedly entered the Maywood store and soon after lunged at victim Nelly Baez, 26, and killed her by stabbing her multiple times, prosecutors said. Gomez also is charged with stabbing another employee who attempted to stop the attack. That victim survived her injuries, prosecutors added.

A vendor and a customer stepped in and allegedly managed to hold down the defendant and detain him while police arrived, prosecutors said.

Deputies said it was a “vicious crime.” A motive remains unknown.

“There’s no rhyme or reason for it. He was just standing there drinking a drink and, then he attacks her for no reason,” Lt. Barry Hall said.

A GoFundMe page said, “Nelly was a hard working person and kind to her community. She was extremely loved by everyone from her family, community, and co workers.”

If convicted as charged, Gomez, a transient, faces a possible maximum sentence of life in state prison. Bail is scheduled at more than $2 million.
