An American Airlines flight that was about land had a near miss after pilots potted a drone in its path just seconds from touching down.

An American Flight from Chicago was just 500 feet off the ground yesterday when the pilot requested police assistance.

The pilot responded to police by saying: ‘Drone on final for American 1317, runway 9.’

The plane was carrying 113 passengers and six crew members.

The aircraft successfully managed to avoid the drone and landed safely.

Police then launched a search around the perimeter in an attempt to locate the drone and the person controlling it, they were unable to find him or the drone.

Senator Bill Nelson said: ‘Today’s incident is yet another example of the danger drones pose to the traveling public.’

‘Finding a way to implement the technology needed to prevent this kind of dangerous situation near our nation’s airports will be one of my top priorities as we begin work on a bill to reauthorize the FAA in the coming weeks.’

Figures show that the FAA receives 25 reports per month of near-misses with drones.
