Police Release Video of Man Who Died After Being Pepper Sprayed

Tuscaloosa, Alabama — On 7/10/15 at 9:19 pm the Tuscaloosa Police Department received a call that a suspect who was wanted for an active Attempting to Elude warrant was sitting on the front porch of a residence. The caller stated the suspect was armed with gun.

Officers responded to the residence in Crescent East Apartments (200 Block of 49th Ave E) and the suspect fled from the porch into the nearby woods. Officers chased the suspect into the woods and when the officers caught up to the suspect he resisted arrest.

The suspect was sprayed with OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) Spray. The suspect continued to fight with officers but officers were able to place him into handcuffs.

While walking out of the woods the suspect collapsed. Officers evaluated his condition and began CPR and called for medical personnel to respond on an emergency status.

The suspect was transported to DCH while medical personnel continued CPR. While at DCH he was pronounced dead at 10:42 pm.

The suspect was identified as Anthony Ware.

Tuscaloosa County Homicide Unit responded to the scene and has started a death investigation which is standard procedure. The Homicide team that will be doing the investigation is made up of Supervisors and non-Tuscaloosa Police Investigators.
