New York, New York—Index crimes continue to decline in New York City. When comparing 2015 through October 31st, versus the same period in 2014, crime is down 3.1 percent or 2,817 fewer crimes, the NYPD said.

On Sunday, November 2, 2014 at 12:45AM, a police officer and a sergeant assigned to the Detective Bureau Grand Larceny Division, in plain clothes and operating an unmarked vehicle, were traveling westbound on Avenue D and stopped at the traffic light at the intersection of Nostrand Avenue, within the confines of the 67 Precinct. While the vehicle was stopped at the traffic light, a 25-year-old male entered the unmarked vehicle through the rear passenger side door. A struggle ensued between the male and the sergeant who was sitting in the front passenger seat. The sergeant’s firearm discharged inside of the vehicle. The male suspect gained control of the sergeant’s firearm and then exited the vehicle and attempted to flee the location with the firearm in hand. At that time, one uniformed officer assigned to a foot post near the incident location and two uniformed officers assigned to a 67 Precinct sector car responded to the scene. The officers approached the armed suspect and gave verbal commands for him to drop the firearm. An exchange of gunfire followed, with the suspect discharging the sergeant’s stolen firearm and the officer on foot post and one of the officers from the sector car also discharging their firearms. Simultaneously, the plain clothes officer who was operating the unmarked vehicle had exited the auto and discharged his firearm at the suspect. The suspect sustained gunshot wounds to his torso and lower leg, and he was apprehended without further incident.

The suspect was transported to Kings County Hospital, where he is listed in critical but stable condition. The sergeant’s firearm was recovered at the scene. No members of the service were shot during the course of the incident.

The sergeant and her operator and the two uniformed officers who discharged their firearms were transported to Methodist Hospital for tinnitus, where they were treated and released.

The investigation is ongoing with charges pending.
