COLUMBUS, OHIO — MarShawn M. McCarrel II apparently took his own life on the steps of the Ohio Statehouse Downtown Monday night. The 23-year-old Black Lives Matter activist was pronounced dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
McCarrel, who lived in the area, wrote on his Facebook page before the act: “My demons won today. I’m sorry.”
He also left several Tweets saying he urinated on the building before the act.

According to BuzzFeed News, McCarrel was a well-known activist based in Ohio. Police said there were no witnesses.
An investigation is ongoing.
