El Paso, Texas – A Texas boy responsible for killing his stepfather with his own gun witnessed the man assault his mother earlier in the day while they were away from house, police say.

On Monday, cops were called to an apartment at 10550 McCombs in El Paso. Responding officers found the shooting victim, 31–year-old Allan Edwards, dead inside the apartment. Edwards had been shot multiple times.

The shooter was identified as his 13–year old stepson. The boy was taken into custody by El Paso police before they handed him off to juvenile authorities.

According to a police report: “Edwards assaulted the juvenile’s mother earlier in the day and the juvenile witnessed that assault. That assault occurred away from the residence. Once back at the residence the juvenile armed himself with a handgun belonging to Edwards. When the couple again began to argue the juvenile produced the handgun and shot Edwards.”

No charges have been filed at this time but police say the investigation is ongoing.

Edwards was a Division Master Gunner with the 1st Armored Division out of Fort Bliss.

The Army confirmed Edwards had served in Afghanistan and was involved in multiple NATO missions.

According to Stripes.com, Edwards and his wife ‘married early last year and welcomed a child in the summer.’
